Who came up with sliders?
It is unknown who came up with ham and cheese sliders, but it does not seem to be a well-documented food dish. The sliders are known to have been invented in Wichita, Kansas by Walter Anderson in 1916. Ten years later he founded White Castle. Sliders at one point were the predominant form of burger on the planet. Walgreens has now come out with ham and cheese slider kit which is a quick way to make ham and cheese sliders.
More or less, a slider is just a small sandwich, however a slider is traditionally considered a small burger cooked with onions and pickles.
What Do I need to make this?
Ingredients:
- Potato slider rolls
- deli ham, thinly sliced
- Swiss cheese, thinly sliced
- unsalted butter, melted
- For the sauce
- dijon mustard
- honey
- EBT bagel seasoning
- onion powder
- Worcesteshire sauce
- salt and pepper to taste
How do I make this?
These sliders are so quick and easy they’ll end up being a go-to.
Instructions:
- First you’re going to preheat your broiler. I use a table top all in one oven thingy.
- Open up your rolls and with the melted butter, brush butter across all of the bun surfaces. I love to make sure that it gets pretty covered. this makes it get nice and crispy and prevents the bun from getting soggy with sauce.
- Broil the buns for 2-3 mins until toasted to your preference.
- Then you’re going to add the ham, and cheese to the bottom buns and return to broiler for cheese to melt.
- For the sauce,
- Mix all remaining ingredients. Don’t forget to taste test in case you prefer your a bit sweeter, saltier, spicier, etc.
- Once you remove the bottom rolls from the oven, drizzle both sides with sauce.
- add pickles and enjoy
Baking time will vary based on the size of pan used, climate and oven variances, etc. Bake until as done as desired; watch to make sure they don’t burn since all ovens vary. Slice into individual sliders and serve immediately. Sliders are best warm and fresh.

Serving suggestions:
You can pair this with anything. If you’re serving a group of guests, it might be easiest to serve other smaller sized dishes so that it’s easy for people to eat a little bit at a time. Nothing is worse than trying to hold a plate of food while chatting people up at a get together. Keep the portions small and keep it moving!
Chips make a great side as do other finger foods. If you’re feeling fancy, check out our deviled egg recipe here https://omnomdelicious.com/deviled-eggs/

Make Ahead Ideas:
I’m not gonna lie, when I make these, I tend to make them deconstructed. To do this, I just heat the ham and melt the cheese over the top of a stove in a pan and keep them separated until I need to put the two together. This prevents the ham and cheese grease from soaking the bread if it’s going to sit for an extended period of time.
By making these deconstructed, you can make them ahead for a few days if you’re into meal prepping.
One great thing about these is that they absolutely don’t even have to be served hot or warm to be enjoyed. Getting that cheese melted and preserving the integrity of the buns are all I care about! Stick em in the fridge and enjoy it like a cold ham and cheese.
Variations:
You could certainly add more toppings such as pickled onions or jalapeno peppers. Instead of making these in slider form, they can always be made as full-sized sandwiches! Let me tell you, once you taste this sauce you’re going to be looking for things to put it on.
How long does homemade honey mustard last in fridge?
This delicious homemade honey mustard dressing is not only easy to make, but can last for up to 3 weeks in the fridge when stored in an airtight container.
What if I don’t have dijon mustard?
If you don’t happen to have dijon mustard, you can use Stone Ground mustard, yellow mustard, or any other mustard for that matter. The nuance in flavor will change as will spiciness, but the “mustard” flavor is there.
The major differences between dijon and yellow mustard are color and taste.
Dijon mustard is a pale yellow color and is creamier due to less vinegar, while yellow mustard is bright yellow.
The taste of Dijon mustard, is spicier than yellow mustard because of the types of seeds that are used in each type. Yellow Mustard is made with yellow and white mustard seeds while Dijon mustard is made with black mustard seeds.
What did we learn?
The ham and cheese sliders with a honey-mustard sauce are the perfect snack for any party, get-together, or even as a prepped lunch. They’re quick, easy, delicious, and can be made ahead of time if you need to!
